Warm-up

  • Start the lesson with greeting. Say “Hello”.

Pre-activity

Slide 3. Phonic Drill. 

Slide 4. Do “Teacher's Family Photos Time” activity

- If you can bring in photos of your family, this is a great activity to do.

- If you can't bring in photos, see the alternative below.

- Draw 4 squares on the top of your board in a row (see image below). Hold up a photo of yourself and ask "Who is this?". Elicit that it is you, stick the photo inside the middle square and write your name under the photo.

- Next take out another photo (e.g. your father) and again ask "Who is this?". Elicit and teach the family vocab and stick the photo in one of the squares and write the word (e.g. “father”) under the photo.

- Do for all of the following: father, mother, brother, sister, grandfather, grandmother - you may not have some of these family members, but for the sake of this lesson, use photos of friends, etc., and pretend they are your brother, grandmother, etc.

Practice

Slide 11. Game Repeat if I am right.

- If students think that you have said the correct word, they have to repeat.

- If students think that you have said the incorrect word, they have not to repeat.

Slide 12. Flashcard Game

- Place the family flashcards on the board in a horizontal line. Then divide the class into two teams. Next, the two teams should line up at opposite ends of the line of flashcards. One student from each team should move down the line towards each other, touching each flashcard and saying the key sentence as they go. For example, “This is my father.”, “This is my mother.”, and so on.

- When they meet, they should stop and have a dialogue using the key expressions. For example,

Student A: Who’s this?

Student B: This is my father.

Student A: Nice to meet you.

Once students have completed the dialogue, they should play Rock, Scissors, Paper. The winner stays where he/she is. The loser goes to the back of their team’s line and the next student from that team gets ready.

- When the teacher says “Go”, the students walk towards each other down the line touching each flashcard and saying the key expression again.

- When they meet, they have a dialogue, play Rock, Scissors, Paper, and so on.

The aim of the game is to reach the other end of the line of flashcards. If they make it all the way to the other side, they get a point for their team.
