Topic: Communication and technology. Grammar. Formal and informal letters

Objectives:

  • to speak about formal and informal letters and their differences;
  • to have practice in writing such letters;
  • to develop students’ speaking and writing skills;
  • to provide a stable and welcoming atmosphere in the class.

Outcomes: at the end of the lesson, the students will be able to talk about correspondence

Materials: Power Point Presentation, Student’s Book, Workbook.

 

Plan

Warm-up:

Slide 2. Greeting.

Slide 3. Introduction. Aim of the lesson.

Pre-activity:

Slide 4. The icons of the lesson.

Slide 5. Word Associations.

Main activity:

Slide 6-9. Work with Student’s Book. SPEAK AND WRITE A) Read the two emails and the statements. Write A for email A, B for email B or AB for both. When it is possible, underline parts of the emails to justify your answers (ex.3, p.26)

Slide 10-13. Work with Student’s Book. B) Look at the two emails again. Which one is formal and which one is informal? What are their main differences? (ex.3, p.27)

Slide 14-15. Work with Student’s Book. C) Match the informal phrases 1-6 below with their more formal equivalents a-f (ex.3, p.27)

Slide 16. Gymnastic for the eyes.

Practice:

Slide 17-19. Work with Student’s Book. D) Talk in pairs. Read the email Tina wrote to the IT teacher of her school. Then imagine you are Tina and tell your partner what happened at school today (ex.3, p.27)

Slide 20. Work with Student’s Book. E) Read the email to the IT teacher again and the tip in the Writing section at the back of the book. Imagine you are Tina and write a letter to your cousin telling him/her what happened (ex.3, p.27)

Slide 21-23. Work in Workbook. C) Harry wrote an informal email to his teacher. Rewrite the underlined parts to make it formal (ex.1, p.24)

Slide 24. Role Play Challenge.

Assessment and evaluation:

Slide 25. Ending of the lesson. Summarizing.

Slide 26. Ending of the lesson. Say “Goodbye!”
